Anna's Anxiety List Sept 22

Applique thread selection is one of my current anxieties.  I've used YLI silk thread for years, and love the way it disappears into the turned edge on needle-turn projects.  However, many of the shops which used to carry silk thread don't have it now.  I suspect part of the problem is cost, as silk thread can be twice as expensive as cotton.  Size 50 cotton thread works, but just doesn't have the strength of silk of the same weight.  For hand-applique projects, I am investing so many hours that I want the materials be the best available.  That's also why I hand-quilt applique projects.  So, what is your experience with applique threads?

I've been a poly girl, living in a poly world--I only found out about cotton thread about a year ago, but I can imagine how nice silk thread would be! Maybe some day I'll be up to par with the rest of you-- actually, it will never happen. But I sure love quilting, and you've taught me so much already. Three cheers for a live-long love of sewing and learning!

You turned me into a silk thread junkie. I broke down and bought a couple color selections on line since the LQS (local quilt shop) didn't carry colors I want. (Weirdos that don't think lime & fuschia are neutrals.)

I love the Mettler 50/2 cotton embroidery thread. It comes in lots of colors and is the same weight as most quilting fabric threads so it blends right in. I've never had a problem with it not being strong enough for hand applique. Have fun.
